These couldn't be read by any of my 3 stand-alone DVD players.

I wrote out a couple to test them out, but NONE of my 3 stand-alone players recognized the disk. They all said 'NO DISK'.
A bit ago I bought some Memorex 4x DVD+RW from wally world, and had trouble writing them. I'd have to switch them back and forth between writers until one would actually 'take'. I think one thing I had to do was a 'FULL format'.. But then I could not rewrite that disk on another drive or else I'd have to do another full format on that drive.
However, those Memorex disks DID play on my main standalone player.
I think the next thing to try is get ONLY Verbatim RW's! As far as write-once media, I haven't had many problems with getting the cheaper stuff. Time will tell on that though. ;)
Just be prepared to return these if they don't work for you.
The MID on the ones I got is (via dvd-identifier):
