Black cartridge mechanically dysfunctional

The black cartridge, C9720A, is the only one of the 4 I have tried to install yet, but when installed it made a terrible grinding noise. Upon inspection one of the gears slides along it's shaft about 6 mm. When I checked the cartridge I was replacing, the same gear did not slide.
