Gotta have em if you want to keep your printer warranty - using OOB inks will void the warranty. Not only that, but the last printer I used non-oem ink in, the print head leaked all over and produced streaks and smears the rest of its life, regardless how much I cleaned it. Let's face it, noone likes the exorbitant prices on inks, but Epson's ink is the highest quality. It does not smudge and smear when wet, the cartridges don't cause leaks and the cartridges do last MUCH longer than the cheap crappy refurb/refill inks.
When Epson starts making a printer under <$50 that works with Linux, and includes inks with it, then maybe I'll switch back to the refurb/refill cheap inks again. Until then, lesson learned - stick with OEM, suck up the cost, and print in grayscale draft mode to make the ink last longer!

expensive as ****
By Cynthia on 11/01/2011
Yes, the epson inks are expensive as **** but if you use any other ink you will void your warranty. Cheaper to replace the printer when it runs out of ink, how stupid is that?
The only real advantage to the OEM ink is its waterproof, compared to the cheap junk which washed completely off the paper with a drop of water.
