I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, but I still had to install the included software. Not a big deal, and it worked on first try after a reboot. I have not tested the distance, but the device only has a small, printed antenna. The computer is only 10 feet from the router, so distance is not an important factor to me. It is small and barely noticeable. It has a pleasant, blue activity light within the translucent, black cover. Overall, it was a great deal.
