RoHS
What is RoHS? It stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive. So what does that mean to me? Well that is a good question. Here’s the breakdown:
- Adopted by the European Union in July 2006
- Restricts the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment
- Lead
- Mercury
- Cadmium
- Hexavalent Chromium
- Polybrominated Biphenyls
- Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether
The restricted materials are hazardous to the environment and pollute landfills, and are dangerous in terms of occupational exposure during manufacturing and recycling.
RoHS helps reduce damage to people and the environment in third-world countries where much of today's "high-tech trash" ends up. The use of lead-free solders and components has provided immediate health benefits to electronics industry workers in prototype and manufacturing operations.
