Toshiba is the result of a merger between two prominent Japanese manufacturers: Tanaka Engineering Works and Hakunetsusha. Before the merger, both companies played a very fundamental role in shaping the infrastructure of Japan and setting the stage for the nation's economic growth which characterized the latter half of the 20 th century. In the era leading up to the 1939 merger, the collective accomplishments of both companies is a list of major, economically game-changing inventions. According to Toshiba's official website, these accomplishments include the introduction of Japan's first incandescent light bulbs, waterwheel power generators, induction motors, X-ray tubes, radio transmission tubes, double coil electric light bulbs, electric washing machines, and refrigerators. No doubt, all quite significant in their impact on the country's productivity and standard of living.
Post-merger, Toshiba would go on to develop innovative products which would define the computer industry. During the 1980s, the company introduced newer types of computer memory for extra capacity and laptop computers for greater portability.
