Pitney Bowes Incorporated began as two separate entities: Arthur Pitney's Pitney Postal Machine Company and Walter Bowes' Universal Stamping Machine Company. Arthur Pitney invented the world's first postage meter, a device used for mechanically imprinting postage on envelopes. Walter Bowes was renting stamp cancelling machines to the U.S. Postal Service. Seeing a surge in the amount of mail circulating through the U.S. Postal Service, Bowes recognized the enormous business potential for automatically applied postage stamps. Hearing of Arthur's Pitney's machine, a meeting was arranged between the two during a time when the U.S. Postal Service was seeing a surge in mail. As a result, the two men formed a partnership and devised a product that combined the functionality of Pitney's postage application machine and Bowes' stamp cancelling machine. In 1920, the U.S. Postal Service officially approved the usage of this device and the Pitney Bowes Corporation was born.
Today, Pitney Bowes produces a range of large scale printers and copiers, in addition to products in their core postage meters business.
