The Super DLT (SDLT) format, introduced in 2000, represented the evolution of the standard Digital Linear Tape (DLT) format by providing increased storage capacity. Previously known as CompacTape, DLT was created by the Digital Equipment Corporation in 1984. Quantum Corporation acquired DLT technology and currently licenses it out to manufacturers for production. The format supports data compression for increased efficiency in data storage and Write Once Read Many (WORM) functionality, making it ideal for archiving data. DLT tape is primarily used for network servers, high-end computing, and DVD authoring.
