DVD-RW Media
Blank recordable DVD±RWs are rewritable optical discs that are capable of being recorded and rewritten to about 1,000 times before needing a replacement. This makes DVD rewritables a great choice for less important data such as daily TV recordings. DVD+RW and DVD-RW have a standard capacity of 4.7GB per disc. The underlying mechanism for DVD Rewritable media, like most recordable media, is in the recording layer. DVD±RWs do come in various speeds and there are certain differences between operating a DVD-RW and DVD+RW.
DVD-RW and DVD+RW are competing blank rewritable formats supported respectively by the DVD Forum and DVD+RW Alliance. Hybrid DVD drives that can handle both are labeled DVD±RW. Because there isn't an agreed standard for recordable DVDs, hybrid drives are very popular for their cross compatibilites. Most modern DVD burners are hybrid drives. The + and - of DVD R media are racing to find new innovations to outpace each other. While new upgrades and advancements will ultimately benefit the consumer, you should double check to ensure the DVD Player you purchase can handle both these formats.
