The CD-R and CD-RW format is used to record general data and audio, with most people recording music. The CD-R format is known as a Write Once Ready Many (WORM) storage medium, meaning that you’re stuck with the data and/or audio copied to the disc after the first burn; it is incapable of later revisions. The opposite holds true for blank media of the CD-RW variety, as multiple rewrites are allowed. Most blank CD-R discs on the market fall into the 80 min 700mb category, meaning they’re capable of storing about 700 megabytes of data, translating to 80 minutes of audio. Granted, CD storage capacity pales in comparison to DVDs and Blu-ray discs, but blank media of the CD-R variety offers some key advantages. The first being faster recording speeds – the 52x max speed results in the burning of a CD in about 90 seconds. Second, CD-R discs offer greater compatibility with a wide range of CD readers (unfortunately, the same can’t be said of CD-RW discs). Interestingly, it took a special dye created by Japanese company, Taiyo Yuden, to provide CD-R with this high compatibility.
