This was actually inspired by mask of Meso-America... particularly the Aztec culture in which they would make mosaic mask using precious and semi-precious materials including turquoise, obsidian, gold pyrite, coral, and shell. These mask were thought to imbue the wearer with special powers and attributes.... so that's the idea behind this one.
